Overview

Keflavík International Airport (IATA Code: KEF) is a major airport serving Iceland that handles approximately 3 million passengers a year. The airport offers international destination routes provided by nearly two dozen carriers. Top destination routes include Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The airport is equipped with a single runway and terminal building named after Leif Erikson, opened in early April 1987. The airport serves as a hub for Iceland Air and WOW Air.

Brief History

Keflavík International Airport was built around a fighter strip by the United States military in early 1942, originally constructed for heavy bombers. Following the war, the airstrip became a popular fueling point for cross-Atlantic flights.  In 1947, the airport/airstrip was renamed Keflavík Airport and turned over to Iceland.
