Keflavík International Airport (IATA Code: KEF) is a major airport serving Iceland that handles approximately 3 million passengers a year. The airport offers international destination routes provided by nearly two dozen carriers. Top destination routes include Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The airport is equipped with a single runway and terminal building named after Leif Erikson, opened in early April 1987. The airport serves as a hub for Iceland Air and WOW Air.
Keflavík International Airport was built around a fighter strip by the United States military in early 1942, originally constructed for heavy bombers. Following the war, the airstrip became a popular fueling point for cross-Atlantic flights. In 1947, the airport/airstrip was renamed Keflavík Airport and turned over to Iceland.
Keflavík International Airport offers a variety of shops and restaurants for travelers including traditional and duty-free shopping such as the Eymundsson Bookstore to the Iceland Gift store, 66° NORTH and Elko Duty Free store. Dining options include the Panorama Bar which serves wine and sushi. Another option is Kaffitár, which serves everything from quiche to artisan coffees. A number of shops carrying international fashion brands are available in the Leifur Eriksson Air Terminal. Additional services at the airport include a foreign currency exchange booth in the departure hall. A bank (Iceland’s Landsbankinn) is located landside in the arrival hall as well as on the second floor of the departure hall. Travelers can also take advantage of the business center as well as shower facilities inside the terminal.
Car Hire Services
Car rental services are located on the south side of the airport to the east of the arrivals terminal. Visitors can access the car rentals from several walkways leading from the air terminal or take shuttles from the arrivals terminal. A large number of major car hire companies provide services from the airport including Keflavik Airport Car Rental, Budget Car and Van Rental, Hertz Iceland, Avis, and Europcar Iceland.
Compare prices and types of vehicles for rent (midsize, 4×4 jeeps, economy, and compact) from Keflavík Airport Car Rental or other providers located at the airport. Car rental stations are clearly marked. For example, Sixt car rental offices are located in the building next to the arrival hall, and provide free shuttle services.
